What is a shower beer, you ask?
A shower beer is one of my favorite rituals of athlete-dom. Most commonly, as the name suggests, it’s a beer you drink while getting clean after a ride or run. But in my case, it has also been a Shower Smoothie, Shower Apples&Peanut Butter, and my personal favorite - A Shower Burrito.
Put yourself into this scenario:
You just got done with a killer workout. Not only did you just put out one of your best efforts in the history of your working out; you also scored 12 King of the Mountain Trophies on Strava, and you’re super high from the endorphins and adrenaline released on that last screamin’ downhill! You can’t let this feeling of awesomeness go uncelebrated! You just don’t feel this good that often.
Your clothes are soaked from sweat, but you’re body’s already cooled down. You know the science says you’re supposed to eat within 15-30 minutes of the conclusion of your workout, and your body has just started to shiver uncontrollably. First, because your sweat is freaking cold now that you’re done riding. Second, because you used every last drop of energy out on the trail. And third, your muscles are stricken with complete terror after what you just did to them on that ride! Not to mention you stink; and your honey doesn't want to come near you.
How can you remedy the need for celebration, calories, warmth, and defunkification all at once? The SHOWER BEER!
Close the bathroom doors. Turn on your tunes. Loud. And dance your calorie-depleted heart out under a hot, steaming stream of water….while eating a burrito. It’s one of the most rewarding feelings you may ever have. Because, yeah! It’s not something you’re supposed to do. Your mom would have been furious at you for such a thing. And yeah! It’s impractical. The steam from the high heat of the shower on your shoulders is making that tortilla disintegrate in your hands. And the dancing is getting the refried beans all over the place, BUT YOU'RE EATING A BURRITO IN THE SHOWER!!!
So, next time you’ve had an amazing workout, and don’t want to let that moment pass without celebration. Reward yourself with a shower beer. Or smoothie. Or, in the very best of scenarios, a shower burrito.
